It’s an impressive package, but be under no illusions: the DxO One can’t match a decent DSLR or the best mirrorless cameras. There’s a license for this £159 piece of software included with the DxO One, and a copy of DxO FilmPack, which normally costs £99. In order to process those, you need to connect the DxO One to your laptop via its micro-USB socket and load the accompanying DxO Connect app to import them, then edit them in DxO’s OpticsPro 10 Elite raw processing application.

You can’t access the raw files on the iPhone, though. Just watch your storage usage, because the files are a huge 85MB each.

The Super RAW files, which comprise four raw frames captured in a quick burst and then stacked together, are ideal for low light landscapes and city shots, and keep the noise down to remarkably low levels. The extra information in the DNG files adds a huge amount of editing flexibility, allowing you to, for instance, dredge up details in the shadows or boost brightness without losing image fidelity – something that just isn’t possible with JPEG files. Photographs can be set to be captured straight to JPEG, DNG raw, or DXO’s proprietary Super RAW format, and it’s the latter two modes that really show the camera at its best. There’s no image stabilisation in place here, but the 35mm equivalent focal length and bright f/1.8 aperture ensure that camera shake isn’t too much of a problem – and even when it is, it’s a doddle to drop the camera into shutter priority mode and set it to 1/40s or 1/50s to ensure sharp shots.
